Applying for a UK student visa (Student Route visa, formerly Tier 4) is straightforward if you prepare properly. Refusals almost always come down to missing documents, insufficient funds, or a weak application — not a blanket policy against Nigerian applicants. This guide walks you through every requirement.

📋 You can apply for your UK student visa up to 6 months before your course start date. Do not apply too early — but do not leave it too late either. Aim for at least 8 weeks before travel.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Unconditional offer from a UK university licensed by the Home Office (UKVI-licensed sponsor)
  • CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number from your university
  • Proof that you can pay your tuition fees and support yourself
  • English language proficiency (IELTS UKVI or WAEC English — depends on your university)
  • TB (tuberculosis) test from an approved clinic in Nigeria
  • You must be 16 or over

Complete Document Checklist

Identity Documents

  • Valid passport — must be valid for your entire stay in the UK
  • Passport-sized photographs — meeting UK visa photo specifications
  • Previous visas — include any previous UK or international visas if applicable

Academic Documents

  • CAS number — your university sends this after you accept your offer and pay a deposit
  • Academic transcripts — from all previous institutions
  • Degree certificates — original or certified copies
  • English language certificate — IELTS UKVI result or WAEC certificate showing C6+ in English (check your specific university's requirements)

Financial Documents

  • Bank statements — covering the last 28 consecutive days (the balance must not drop below the required amount on any of those days)
  • The required amount depends on your course location:
Study LocationRequired Monthly AmountFor 9 months
London£1,483/month£13,347 + tuition
Outside London£1,334/month£12,006 + tuition
⚠️ If your first year's tuition has already been paid, you only need to show living costs. If not paid, add the full first-year tuition to the amounts above.

Health Documents

  • TB test certificate — required for all Nigerian applicants. You must take the test at a UK Visas and Immigration approved clinic in Nigeria. The two approved providers in Nigeria are The Afriglobal Medicare clinic (Lagos) and Clinix Healthcare. Your result is valid for 6 months.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — you must pay this online before submitting your application. It costs £776 per year of your course.

The Application Process Step by Step

Step 1 — Receive Your CAS

Your CAS is a unique reference number issued by your university. Do not start your visa application without it. Your CAS confirms your place, course details, and tuition fees to the Home Office.

Step 2 — Apply Online

Apply at gov.uk/student-visa. Create an account, complete the online form, and upload your documents. Pay the visa fee (£490 as of 2026) and the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Step 3 — Book Your Biometric Appointment

After submitting online, book an appointment at a UKVCAS (UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services) centre in Lagos or Abuja to give your fingerprints and photograph.

Step 4 — Attend Your Biometric Appointment

Bring your passport and appointment confirmation. The appointment itself takes 15–30 minutes. Some service points allow you to upload documents yourself; others do it at the centre.

Step 5 — Wait for a Decision

Standard processing takes approximately 3 weeks. Priority processing (extra fee) can reduce this to 5 working days. You can track your application status online.

Step 6 — Collect Your BRP

If approved, your passport will be returned with a sticker (vignette) valid for 30 days. When you arrive in the UK, you must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days from the post office listed in your visa letter.

Common Reasons for Refusal — and How to Avoid Them

  • Funds dropped below the required level during the 28-day period — maintain the balance consistently throughout
  • Bank statement format issues — use official bank-stamped statements, not internet printouts
  • CAS expired — your CAS is valid for 6 months; apply promptly after receiving it
  • TB test from unapproved clinic — only use UKVI-approved clinics, no exceptions
  • Inconsistency between application form and documents — check every detail matches exactly
✅ Your visa application is assessed on whether you meet the requirements — not on an officer's personal judgement. If your documents are complete and correct, approval should follow.

After You Arrive — Important Steps

  • Collect your BRP within 10 days of arriving
  • Register with a local GP (doctor) using your NHS entitlement
  • Open a UK bank account (Monzo or Starling are easiest for new arrivals without UK credit history)
  • Register your address with your university's international student office
