Can You Study in Canada Without IELTS? (Nigerian Students)
Can Nigerian students get into Canadian universities without IELTS? What alternatives exist and which universities accept WAEC or TOEFL instead.
IELTS is the most common English language test required for Canadian university admission and study permit applications. But many Nigerian students either do not have IELTS results yet, find the cost prohibitive, or are looking for institutions that accept alternative proof of English proficiency. This guide explains every option available to you.
Why IELTS is Usually Required
Canadian universities require English language proof for two separate reasons. First, for academic admission — to confirm you can study effectively in English. Second, for your Canadian study permit — Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires evidence that you meet English language requirements. These are separate requirements with separate rules, and satisfying one does not automatically satisfy the other.
Most Nigerian students assume that because they studied in English their entire life, they are automatically exempt. Unfortunately this is not how Canadian immigration rules work. IRCC requires documented proof from an approved test unless you completed a full programme at an institution where English was the sole language of instruction — and even then, some visa officers will still request a test score.
IELTS Alternatives Accepted in Canada
TOEFL iBT
TOEFL is accepted by virtually all Canadian universities as an alternative to IELTS. Minimum scores are typically 80–100 overall depending on the institution and programme. The test is offered at test centres in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. Many Nigerian students find TOEFL easier than IELTS, particularly in the reading and listening sections. TOEFL scores are also accepted by IRCC for study permit applications, making it the most complete IELTS alternative.
Duolingo English Test
An increasing number of Canadian universities now accept the Duolingo English Test — a much cheaper and faster alternative that you can take at home on a computer. It is accepted by institutions including University of Manitoba, Cape Breton University, Lakehead University, and many Canadian colleges. The test costs approximately $59 USD (around ₦70,000), significantly less than IELTS. However, Duolingo is not currently accepted by IRCC for study permit purposes — so you may still need IELTS or TOEFL for the visa stage even if your university accepts Duolingo for admission.
Cambridge English Qualifications
Cambridge B2 First (FCE) or C1 Advanced (CAE) are accepted by some Canadian universities in place of IELTS. These qualifications are well recognised globally and are taken at British Council centres in Nigeria. If you already hold a Cambridge certificate from secondary school, contact your target university directly to confirm whether it meets their English language requirement.
PTE Academic
The Pearson Test of English Academic is accepted by a growing number of Canadian universities and is also recognised by IRCC for study permit applications. PTE is computer-based, results are available within 48 hours, and many test-takers find the speaking section easier since you speak to a computer rather than an examiner. Test centres are available in Lagos and Abuja.
Universities That May Waive IELTS for Nigerians
Some Canadian universities exempt applicants who completed their previous education entirely in English from an English-speaking country. Since Nigeria's university system operates in English, Nigerian graduates applying for postgraduate study may qualify for an exemption at certain institutions. Universities to check directly include:
- University of Manitoba — has granted waivers to Nigerian graduates in certain programmes
- University of Regina — considers English-medium study history for exemptions
- Lakehead University — known to be flexible for applicants from English-medium institutions
- Cape Breton University — accepts Duolingo and has waiver provisions for some applicants
- Algoma University — reviews waivers on a case-by-case basis
- Trent University — has provisions for applicants from English-medium countries
The Study Permit English Requirement
For your Canadian study permit, IRCC requires one of the following for applicants from non-exempt countries (Nigeria is not exempt):
- IELTS General Training or Academic (minimum 6.0 overall)
- TOEFL iBT (minimum 60)
- PTE Academic (minimum 59)
- Completing a full secondary or post-secondary programme taught entirely in English at a recognised institution
If you are applying via the Student Direct Stream (SDS) — which offers faster processing — the English requirement is stricter: IELTS Academic with a minimum of 6.0 in each band. SDS does not currently accept TOEFL or Duolingo.
How to Prepare for IELTS on a Budget
If you decide to take IELTS (which remains the most straightforward path), preparation does not need to be expensive. The British Council offers free IELTS practice materials on its website. The official IELTS.org website has free sample papers for both Academic and General Training. YouTube channels such as IELTS Liz and IELTS Simon offer comprehensive free lessons covering all four skills. Most Nigerian students who prepare seriously for 6–8 weeks achieve the required score of 6.0–6.5 on their first attempt.
Cost Comparison: English Tests Available in Nigeria
- IELTS — approximately ₦130,000–₦160,000
- TOEFL iBT — approximately ₦100,000–₦120,000
- PTE Academic — approximately ₦90,000–₦110,000
- Duolingo English Test — approximately ₦70,000 (taken from home)
- Cambridge B2/C1 — approximately ₦80,000–₦100,000
Practical Recommendation
The most straightforward path for Nigerian students is to take either IELTS or TOEFL, both of which satisfy the university admission requirement and the study permit requirement in one test. The test cost is small relative to the total cost of studying in Canada (tuition alone is typically CAD $15,000–$30,000 per year). Spending significant time pursuing IELTS-free pathways often limits your university options and can delay your application timeline without saving much money overall.
If cost is your primary concern, TOEFL or PTE Academic are slightly cheaper than IELTS and equally accepted. The Duolingo English Test is the cheapest option but does not satisfy the study permit requirement — so you would still need a second test for the visa stage, which ends up costing more overall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my WAEC English result instead of IELTS?
WAEC results are not accepted by Canadian universities or by IRCC as proof of English language proficiency for study permit purposes. WAEC is recognised as an academic qualification but not as a standardised English language test. You will need one of the approved tests listed above.
What if I studied at a Nigerian university where all lectures were in English?
Some Canadian universities will consider a letter from your Nigerian university confirming that English was the sole medium of instruction. However, this typically only satisfies the academic admission requirement, not the IRCC study permit requirement. Contact your target university's admissions office directly to confirm their policy.
Is there a minimum IELTS score for a Canadian student visa?
IRCC does not publish a single minimum score, but universities typically require IELTS 6.0–6.5 Academic, and the Student Direct Stream requires 6.0 in each band. Meeting your university's minimum score is generally sufficient for the study permit application as well.
