Chevening Scholarship 2026 — Complete Guide for Nigerians
How to apply, who qualifies, what it covers and how to write a winning Chevening application from Nigeria in 2026.
The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government's flagship international scholarship and one of the most prestigious awards available to Nigerian students. Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), it covers everything — tuition, flights, living costs and more. This guide explains exactly who qualifies, how to apply, and what makes a winning application.
What Does Chevening Cover?
A Chevening award is fully funded. Recipients receive:
- Full tuition fees paid directly to your chosen UK university
- Monthly living allowance (set at the UK Research Council rate for your area)
- Economy class return flights from Nigeria to the UK
- Arrival and departure allowances
- Visa application fee reimbursement
- Access to exclusive Chevening events and the global alumni network of 50,000+ leaders
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for Chevening from Nigeria you must:
- Be a Nigerian citizen
- Have an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 (Second Class Upper)
- Have at least two years of work experience (paid or voluntary, accumulated before or after your undergraduate degree)
- Apply to three eligible UK universities for a one-year master's degree
- Intend to return to Nigeria for at least two years after completing your scholarship
- Not hold dual UK citizenship or permanent residency
The Application Process
When to Apply
Chevening applications open in August each year and close in early November for the following September intake. Shortlisting and interviews happen between February and April. Awards are announced in June.
Step 1 — Create Your Application (August–November)
Apply at chevening.org. The application includes four 500-word essays (see below), your employment history, and details of three UK universities you are applying to. You must also apply to your chosen universities independently — Chevening does not do this for you.
Step 2 — Shortlisting (January–February)
The British High Commission in Nigeria reviews applications. Shortlisted candidates are invited for interview.
Step 3 — Interview (March–April)
Interviews are conducted in person or virtually by a panel from the British High Commission. They assess your leadership qualities, the clarity of your study and career plans, and your connection to Nigeria's development.
Step 4 — University Offers (By July)
You must have a confirmed unconditional offer from one of your three chosen UK universities before the award can be confirmed.
The Four Essays — How to Write Them
The essays are the heart of your Chevening application. Each is 500 words maximum. They assess:
1. Leadership and Influence
Describe a specific situation where you demonstrated leadership. This does not mean a formal management role — it means a situation where you influenced others, drove change, or solved a problem. Be specific: name the organisation, the challenge, your actions, and the measurable outcome. Avoid generic statements like "I am a natural leader."
2. Networking
Describe how you have built and used professional relationships to achieve something meaningful. Chevening values connectors — people who bring others together. Give a specific example of a network you built or used, and what it achieved.
3. Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Describe a situation where you came up with a new solution to a problem — in your workplace, community, or field. Innovation does not have to be technical; it can be a new process, a new approach, or a new collaboration.
4. Study Plan and Career Plan
This is where you explain why this specific master's, at these specific universities, at this specific time, will help you achieve specific goals in Nigeria. The more specific and credible your plan, the stronger this essay. Generic answers like "I want to gain knowledge to develop my country" score poorly. Name the sector you will work in, the organisation you plan to join or build, and the problem you intend to solve.
Choosing Your Three Universities
You must apply to three UK universities for an eligible one-year master's programme. You can change your choices later, so do not overthink this — but choose programmes that genuinely align with your stated career plan. Inconsistency between your essays and your university choices is a red flag. Your university applications are independent of Chevening — apply through each university's own portal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply if I already have a master's degree?
Yes, having a previous master's does not automatically disqualify you — but you must clearly justify why a second master's is necessary for your stated career goals.
What if I don't get an offer from any of my three universities?
You will not receive the award. Always apply to three universities where you are a strong candidate, not just prestigious institutions where admission is unlikely.
Can I choose any university in the UK?
You can choose any UK university that offers a Chevening-eligible one-year master's programme. Check chevening.org/scholarships for the list of eligible programmes.
